Air freight rates are calculated using shipment
weight.
When comparing air freight rates, the pricing will usually be given to you as
a cost per kilogram. However, in freight, weight is determined either by the gross
weight (i.e. what you see when you put the shipment on a scale) or volumetric weight (i.e. the size of the
shipment). See our article about chargeable weight to
learn more.
After the size, some suppliers have additional fees. These may be oversized fees
(cartons too big), operations fees (flat costs), and remote locations fees.
COVID, COVID, and COVID!
We know
you're tired of hearing about it, and we're definitely tired of talking about it! Unfortunately the
reality is that logistics is still heavily impacted by outbreaks at ports and a reduced number of
flights.
Prior to the pandemic, air freight rates were available for around US$ 7.00/kg during peak
season (heavy shipping volume), and around $US 4.00 during slow season (significantly less shipping volume).
At COVID's peak we were seeing close to US$ 20/kg! Nowadays pricing is floating in the US$ 12.00/kg range
depending on delivery time and whether tax and duty are rolled into the price.
Air cargo rates fluctuate depending on the time of the year and the starting and
destination countries, but for a popular route like China to the USA, expect to pay approximately US$ 7.00 per
kg. This means air cargo rates are about US$ 6,400.00 per ton. Sometimes it helps to figure out air cargo
rates on a per mile basis, but this can be unreliable depending on where the plane lands and how far the last
mile travel is.
Saving money on air cargo rates is a problem we solve every day at Bookairfreight.
What it really comes down to is being flexible with the delivery times, as well as negotiating with multiple
suppliers to find the best service quality. If you can afford to wait 15 to 20 days for your goods to arrive,
this will be cheaper than needing the goods in 6 to 8 days. Additionally, look for suppliers that provide tax
and duty inclusive rates - depending on the tax and duty rate for your products, you can save a substantial
amount on your air cargo costs. Use our platform
to compare instant air cargo rates.
Bookairfreight provides two types of air cargo solutions - traditional air freight
and courier (UPS, DHL, FedEx, etc) freight. Traditional air freight takes approximately 15 to 20 days door to
door, whereas courier can take under 8 days door-to-door. Use our platform to compare instant air cargo rates.
